Shiny has arrived!
So, today I unwrapped Shiny, my lovely new baby laptop. This is glorious, as my desktop is (a) over 7.5 years old and (b) rather difficult to move around.

Naturally, the first thing I did was download Firefox and set it as my default browser (Emma laughed, but I'll not suffer the taint of IE longer than necessary).
My second action was to set this as my wallpaper, because Shiny is black and glossy and it just seemed so very fitting.

But now I require a chat client. I'd much rather have an all-in-one client than load each individual program (because let's face it, if I do that I'll be on AIM and AIM only from now until forever). I require whatever program to have the option of automatically logging all my conversations-- my friends are some funny sumbitches and I can't always remember the many ways they make me giggle without some help. I've been using Trillian for the last six or seven years, and it's been okay. But I am told there is more out there. So, suggestions?

Poll #1507424 Help me annoy everyone with my incessant chatter.

I gotta download a new chat client to Shiny, the new laptop. What should I go with?

A piano up my nose
Wishing everyone a happy, prosperous, yada yada, new year.

Yesterday I pulled out and set up my high-tech rig (above) to do a transfer from cassette to mp3 for a friend I'd be seeing at the New Year's Eve party.  Then, as long as I had it out, I proceeded to launch into a project I've had pending all year - transferring my old "livingroom tapes" to digital.  (These are Bean Sidhe, Welcome to the Real World, and Shouting Theater in a Crowded Fire, three albums I recorded back in the 80's as Yule gifts for friends.)  I was working on a "Levantine Pilaf in Pastry" for the party, but for the raw data capture I could just start everything off and come back in 30 minutes when the side was done.  The first two tapes went well, then on side 2 of Theater everything came to a screeching halt.  Literally.

Alas, it would seem my old boombox has boomed its last.  So this project goes back on the queue until such time as I can borrow a working cassette player.

Open Fannish Hailing Frequencies: Seeking Roommate for Ysobel
So! [personal profile] ysobel is seeking a roommate, for FREE RENT. Here's the deal--she is disabled, uses a wheelchair, has described her condition in more detail here, and (this is the key part) cannot get in and out of bed by herself. She has aides who regularly put her to bed and get her up in the morning, but she needs a roommate to live with her so that in the event of emergency, flood, fire, zombies, what have you, they could get her out of bed and into her chair and out the door. So she is offering FREE RENT for being on call to help her out of bed in the event of midnight emergency. (I have put her to bed while visiting her, and I have no special training, it's easy enough to do with just [personal profile] ysobel's instruction. She uses a mechanized lift harness thing, so there's no heavy lifting involved on her assistant's part. She actually sleeps with the harness unhooked but still in place, so Emergency Get Out Get Out Get Out! would probably consist of hook harness up to lift, swing her over to her chair, unhook, buckle her seatbelt, and off she goes.)

[personal profile] ysobel lives in Davis, CA. She prefers a female roommate. If you know anyone in the area or soon to be moving to the area who would like a place to live for FREE RENT in exchange for In Case of Emergency services, please get in touch! If you don't know anybody, please ask anyone who might! You can leave a comment here and I'll forward it, or contact her directly. If you prefer to get in touch by email rather than DW comment, my email is juliette dot torres at gmail dot com.

ETA: [personal profile] ysobel has made her own entry about it, in which she largely cribs from me but includes her own contact info.

If you're in hermit mode, watch this Zelda marathon for charity. They're on Ocarina of Time now and have doubled their original goal of $2000.

today's mission
Get out of hermit mode long enough to do the following:

1. Go see some movies I've been putting off, like Avatar and Sherlock Holmes.
2. Go to Mary's party
3. Get home without asking anyone for help.

I'm utterly convinced that nobody wants to see me there. I'm going because I recognize that this conclusion is based on my mood more than on facts.

Meme a little meme
Since all the cool kids are doing it, and it's easy, here are the first lines of the first entries of each month of 2009.  (When the hell was I ever home this year?)

January first is as good a day as any to stop and look at the year behind, and the year ahead.
...all except for a few items that need to wait until tomorrow (like my songbook and nightie).
If you'd like me to send you a postcard from Nepal, leave your name & address here.
While my body travelled east, my brain seems to have chosen the opposite path around the globe, as I'm now operating roughly on Eastern Daylight Time, but at least we're closing in on the same continent now.
As some of you know, my big project for this year is to get a database of my lyrics online.
I've been thinking, it's just a couple more years before I turn the big 5-0, and I want to take a really radical vacation when I do.
After weeks of getting nowhere, I have decided to say millenium hand and shrimp to the test server I've been trying to set up on my old laptop, and just do my work on the live server.
Finished packing for Montreal, except my filkbook, guitar, and a few other things I'll throw in tomorrow morning.
Well, you can color me peeved.
OK! So, I'm getting my stuff together this morning, and driving up to Prescott tonight.
The next update I plan to make to NanSongs is a button to list all songs based on books, TV shows, comics, etc. according to the title of the book, TV show, comic, etc that it's based on.
I'm thankful for a catsitter who's experienced at giving subcutaneous fluids.

Recipie du jour

Start 2 Trader Joe's frozen latkes in the toaster oven.  Meanwhile, heat a little olive oil in a small frypan.  Take a generous handful of curly kale, wash, chop finely, and saute in the oil.  You will need to add a little water now and then to keep the kale from burning.  When it has cooked down, add 1/3 - 1/2 cup Kitchens of India Delhi Dum Aloo sauce and a bit more water to thin (but don't make soup).  Make a bed out of the mixture, and put a dimple in the middle.  Crack an egg into the dimple, cover, and reduce heat so the egg poaches.  If you add the egg about a minute after you have to turn the latkes, they both should be done at the same time.  Place the latkes on a plate and slide the egg & sauce on top.

Now I'm sure you've heard the sorry tale, of the day when Johnny fell
My website's down. Everything on my server's offline, and has been for at least 19 hours. Mail is still flowing, and I can ssh into my shell account, but there's nothing there. The files and subdirectories are all gone.

I must add that this isn't a hack attempt; this is a maintenance failure at Dreamhost. It appears that they forgot someone was using the computer that all my files are on. I think.

Seven days from today, I'll be checking into my hotel room for [info]animelosangeles. I'm optimistic about the convention, but I'm not happy with the website.

EDIT: Came back up about three hours after this post.

So, a question.
Mom made a comment about me not staying in touch with my old friends from high school.  However, to the best of my knowledge her, and Dad's, "old friends" were all of later than high school vintage.  The group I used to hang out with (drama club, musicians, and other reprobates) had pretty much drifted apart by the time I moved to Arizona.  Apparently last fall was my class' 30th reunion, but I wasn't disappointed that I only heard about it after.  OTOH, when KUGS-FM, the college radio station I worked for, had a big reunion, I was miffed that the invitation arrived after the fact.

Am I just weird?  Do most people maintain friendships from high school?  Do you?  Does geographical distance make a difference?

New Year's!
As is customary, ConHQ will be hosting the New Year's party. Show up around 7 (on the 31st, of course), we'll be running the grill. Usual burgers and dogs for $3. Please let us know if you plan on doing that (and roughly how much you expect to eat) so we can have enough-but-not-too-much food. Regardless, bringing a side dish or something is a Good Thing.

Also, we will be serving from-scratch margaritas (i.e. we're not using premade mix, we're mixing our own from lime juice, water, and agave nectar). We need a head count on that one, too.

And, since it's going to run late (i.e. until the last partygoer leaves or falls asleep) and involve drinking, crash space will be available. Reserve early if you want couch or FomBag space, and bring your own blankets/pillow.

See you there!

Tomorrow will be my laundry day
Just got back from the airport run.  The house seems suddenly quiet - well, in part that's due to the cats being out in the garage, sitting on the car.  They were ubiquitous but mostly behaved themselves this weekend.

Our itinerary heading up north was just too ambitious and everyone wound up exhausted when we got home late Saturday night.  Mom's 83 but used to daily walking - in the mall, out of the weather and crowds and on a flat surface.  Brother felt the need to come up with a battle strategy for each excursion, and with Mom's slight hearing loss this sounded a lot like Non-Sequiter Woman meets Repeats-himself Lad.  Christmas brunch at Little America was deemed good but paled in comparison with past years at the Phoenician.  We drove out to see a bit of the Painted Desert, then a short visit to downtown Flagstaff, where the most happenin' thing was a trio of skateboarders in the underground parking garage.  Oh, and we saw the giant pinecone that they drop on New Year's Eve.

Bozing Day morning we arrive at the Grand Canyon Railway depot in Williams just barely on time - to a scene of absolute bedlam.  The cheek-to-jowl crowd inside eventually resolves into a serpentine line of people trying to buy or pick up tickets, due to all but two of the ticket agents calling in sick.  Mom & Cliff not impressed with scenery on the ride up to the Canyon, but I enjoyed looking for animal tracks in the snow.  We had lunch at El Tovar, where we had a decent view of the Canyon from the table, then took her outside for a brief view over the rim before heading back inside.

Interestingly, there was a wedding at El Tovar while we were there.  The bride wore a strapless gown.  Outside.  The high that day was roughly freezing.  Yeah.

Spent the last couple days pretty much collapsed.  (I did manage to sneak off to the gym this morning.)  And now I shall go watch stupid TV and veg out.
