Minimalist movie review. 500 Days of Summer. Pretty decent, for a romantic comedy/light drama kind of thing. And a bit quirky for the type (which I consider a plus) Inspired me with a vague desire to do a flash mob of musical-style everyone-in-the-park-dancing-together kind of thing. And I was rather amused by the last bit.

Battle for Terra Good movie. Very touching. Also not as preachily environmentalist as I thought it might be. Though my inner scientist had to bite her tongue to keep from screaming "It doesn't *work* like that!" at a couple of points. ( Spoilertext ho ) The 3d glasses were a touch uncomfortable, though.

Movie review: Alien Tresspass Broke my depressing-movie streak. That movie? Pure, top-grade swiss. Or maybe cheddar. In other words? Cheese, in cheese sauce, with a cheese topping. But, the good kind.

Knowing: 2 for 2 on depressing movies. Well, that was rather depressing. And not even depressing-but-cool, like Watchmen, just... rather depressing. ( Spoilertext hidden in the cut ) So, in all? Fairly sucky movie.

Saw Watchmen prescreening... ...Well, that was violent and rather depressing. If you're at all squeamish about violent death, there *will* be places where you'll be closing your eyes, if you go to see it. And <spoiler redacted> and <spoiler redacted> were each a**holes, in their own way. No after-credits thing, if ya care. ( Hidden spoilers below )

What movie do I want to see? So. I have a ticket to see a free movie. It expires on the 30th. There's... pretty much nothing I want to see in the first-run theaters right now, though somehow it seems a waste to use it on a cheapie-theater movie. Anything I'm missing? (I've already seen Nim's Island... it was... a bit flat, though charming enough I suppose. I'd definitely take my hypothetical preteen daughter to see it, but found it a bit too... cutesy isn't *quite* the right word, but it's close.) If only it was good for 2 more days, I could see Iron Man with it. As it is, I may well catch The Spiderwick Chronicles. Edit: Fortuitously, I missed The Spiderwick Chronicles (they didn't have a 7 pm showing that day), and I had the bright idea of buying an advanced ticket. So I saw Iron Man. Good flick.

Movies I Haven't Seen (and a repeat request for audiobook suggestions...) So. I haven't seen many movies in the past couplefew years. At some point, I'd like to catch up on anything good that I missed. I'm building this list mostly from Jan. '05-Sept. '06 Tucson movie newspaper sections (as well as the odd from-memory jostling, things mentioned in reviews, and so forth), so if you wish to suggest things not in that time frame that I might not have seen, or more obscure movies in that time frame, feel free. But it may be safely assumed that I *have* seen things I mention sequels to, and *haven't* seen things I mention prequels of. This list will be added to, I just started to write it, I have many more sections to dredge through yet.
( Things I Probably Want To See: ) ( Things I Want To See If They Suck Less Than They Are Alleged To: ) ( Things I Probably Want To See If They Won't Hit My Gore/Horror Triggers Too Hard: ) ( A Grabbag Of Things I Might Be Convinced To Want To See: ) Given this list: anyone have anything to say about any of 'em? Did you see them and they sucked? Did you see them and they were wonderful? Anyone have 'em and want to lend 'em to me? Anyone also want to see 'em, and maybe we can rent them and have a movie night? I'll bring popcorn.
Also, I frequently listen to audiobooks, and would like to fill in some of the time with more "nutritious" reading. So, can anyone suggest either 1. (specific) classics that aren't deadly dull, and have happy endings, or 2. interesting nonfiction that might be available (and usefully consumed) via audiobook?
edit: list last added to 5/20 or thereabouts. A few additions, a few things moved.

Yo, ho, yo, ho, a pirate's life for me. Yay for free movie premieres. Cool movie. Explosions, sword fights, crabs, rum, danger, romance, pirates... ( Spoilerific speculation within. I've spoilertexted it, but click at your own risk. ) Thoughts/ideas/funny noises? If you comment on this in a spoilery manner, please hide it with FONT COLOR="#FFFFFF" in angle brackets. With a /font when you're done.

Yay for dvds. Finally saw Matrix Revolutions. Really not sure why everyone seems to have hated the last 10 minutes. It was a bit depressing, but it also felt very--right. And, my computer's *really really slow* right now. Yay for an alignment eating every cpu cycle it can... (edit: title was screwy 'cause I was typing near-blind, because of the alignment, which is over now. Yay.)

Gah! Joss is an evil, evil, evil, evil man. ( Serenity spoilers. Don't read this if you haven't seen the movie. Really. I mean it. Very severe spoilage. ) Go see Serenity. Shiny, shiny movie, even if Joss is eeeeeeeeeevil.

Movieage... I just saw I, Robot. Pretty good flick. And the very last bit was *quite* thought-provoking. So--if you were In Charge, and we had developed machines that were reasonably verging on human intelligence, how would you alter the laws to accomodate this fact? What rights would robots/AI's have? What laws would apply to them? Would there be any responses to disobedience/flaws other than repair or shutdown? You can assume 3-laws robots, or not.
And, ( presidential memery ) I guess i'm not gonna be president.

Movies are educational! (sorry 'bout the length) Saw Whale Rider today (well, technically, yesterday). Very good movie, I quite recomend it. A tad on the slow side, don't expect action-packed, but--very--fulfilling. For those who don't know, it's about a Maori girl who's the oldest child of the widowed first son of her clan's chief... very deep, moving, etc. And I learned something. (and I learned something else looking for the link about what I learned) Most of you have probably seen the little Maori tiki carvings, or a reasonable imitation, generally of jade or (in the case of tourist-level imitations) something vaguely resembling jade. There's a site on them here: http://www.lawas.co.nz/LINKS/tikipage.htm (I'd put that as HTML, but, er, I don't remember how, Semagic always did that for me [beats Semagic with a stick]), wherein I learned that "tiki" means "penis". But on to what I learned from the movie: you may have seen such carvings that appear to have their tongues sticking out (I swear I have, though the link I found doesn't seem to show that) And there are definitely other random Maori carvings with tongues sticking out, such as this one: http://giftsofnz.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=Bone Art Place&Product_Code=boneartplace-176&Category_Code=KAI Well, the grandfather in the movie was teaching the young men of his clan schtuff about traditional fighting and such, and explained that sticking your tongue out at an enemy is symbolically saying "I'm going to eat you". Or something of that nature.
Also, random funny bit from the movie (imperfectly remembered): Our Heroine scolds one of her grandmother's friends for smoking, mentioning something about Maori women needing to protect their childbearing properties. After she leaves the room, the woman says "I'd have to be smoking in a pretty funny place for it to affect my childbearing properties".
And now for a meme. ( memery committed here ) edit: more memery added. A lot more.

Mostly good flick... Saw Harry Potter yesterday. (well, technically yesterday, but it's still "today' in terms of sleep) I mostly liked it, but there was one nontrivial flaw. ( Spoilage for the 3 people out there who have not read the book... )

Life update kinda thing Saw Spy Kids. If you haven't seen it--don't bother.
I am happy. Last night, a friend was over until 3 pm--first we went to (2 different) parks and played on the swings and such. Then we came to my place, I showed him Nethack, and we played You Don't Know Jack. I went to Bookmans--I had a free book waiting for me in the bookstore *near* bookmans--ended up getting an advanced-reader copy of 4 novellas related to Ender's Game (including the original Enders Game novella). Then, at Bookmans itself, I found Dragonstar, which I've been waiting to find; and several bargain (=$.50) books that looked interesting, including Snow Crash. Then I went to JoAnn's, and got nothing, except a bit of advice on gorilla repair. But then I went to my mother's, and got some elderly bananas, 3 eggs, a bit of tapioca, a wishbone, some turkey skin, a mashed potato candy (they're good, really. Too bad the only person I know who knows how to make them died several years ago... it's frozen, yes it's several years old), some sunflower seeds, and some sesame seeds. Yes, these are good things.

Movieage Saw Sinbad. Twas pretty spiff. Not world-class-rave-to-everybody good, but good enough to recommend to others.
I have been a horrible lizard-mommy lately. Feeding her every other day (which isn't too bad) and sometimes less (which *is*); not cleaning her cage anything *like* regularly... poor Lois.

Long time no speak.. Saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen today. Rather shiny... not a great movie, but shiny. I think I'm willing to forgive it more than other people because the *characters* were fairly well-done and interesting, and I'm willing to forgive a *lot* if you give me characters I enjoy. My mom didn't like it, however. No danger of a haggis shortage.
Last night, I ate a grape thingie (basically like a popcicle in a cup, actually Popcicle brand, with juice in) that made my tongue and the inside of my lips kind of greyish-black. I looked like a very inexpert goth. This thought amused me.
I am *so* glad cooler weather is *starting* to show up. [sweats profusely]

Movieage I saw The Hulk today. ( Musings of dubious merit ) And, I thought of something he could wear both as Bruce and as the Hulk. A loose, wide-necked poncho. It might not cover *too* much when he's big 'n green, but at least, afterwards, he wouldn't be mostly-naked with ripped clothes. (and, he gives new meaning to the song "It's not easy being green")

Weekend at the movies I had a very cinematic weekend. Saw Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on Saturday, and Daredevil today. Both quite good flicks, and both *definitely* needed to be seen on the big screen. Though I think the heroine in Daredevil had a *goofy* name. When she first said it, I thought she said "Electric Nachos"... and I rather suspect she's still of this world (from the way she died, I suspect paramedics may've been able to recesitate (I know that's not how you spell it) her.
I like cheapie theaters.
